Temple of the Tooth
The golden roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic sheds one Buddhist artefact that attracts thousands of tourists to Sri Lanka alone – the sacred tooth of the Lord Buddha, safely housed within seven protective golden caskets which are publicly displayed rarely. Located beside the emerald green Kandyan Lake within the royal Kandyan palace complex, the Temple of the Tooth, with its immensely detailed inner structures, is a must-visit site in Kandy.
Udawattakale Sanctuary
At the sacred Temple Tooth’s backdoors lies the Udawattakele Forest Reserve stretching across an astounding 257 acres of land. Lose yourself amongst its towering trees and melodious chirps of flocks of birds that rest on branches. Trek the trails of the sacred city’s hill-ridge to glimpse upon 400 species of plants, 70 species of birds and 32 diverse species of butterflies and various mammals that live in its serenity.
Royal Botanical garden
Synonymous to a young couple’s paradise in local chatter, this is the island’s largest botanical garden – the perfect place for two to get lost in. Home to over 4,000 plant species, the Royal Botanical Garden is a laid back and serene site with fauna that appeals to the eyes in the sacred city of Kandy. Nature lovers seek refuge under the shades of its ancient trees, hoping they’d enjoy the breeze for as long as the time permits.
